Grounds Maintenance Standards and Information

Grass Management

We manage all our grass areas which includes the monitoring of these areas for safety as well as grass cutting and general upkeep.

Grass is cut to varying specifications and heights at varying frequencies dependent on location, use and environmental impact.

Frequencies range from annual cut and clear regimes where bio-diversity is the main consideration, to weekly cutting where use demands it, or where a high visual standard is required. The clippings arising from cutting operations are not removed but in high amenity areas they are collected and composted. On occasions some unsightliness or nuisance is unavoidable but paths should always be left broadly clear of cuttings so as not to compromise their safe use.

Maintenance of Urban Highway Verges (Grass Cutting Only)

We cut most adopted verges within the restricted speed limit zones of the following towns and villages: Alford, Burgh le Marsh, Chapel St. Leonard’s, Fotherby, Grimoldby, Horncastle, Hundleby, Ingoldmells, Legbourne, Louth, Mablethorpe, Manby, Marshchapel, New Bolingbroke, North Somercotes, Skegness, Spilsby, Sutton on Sea, Tetney, Tetney Lock, Utterby, Wainfleet and Woodhall Spa.

These verges are maintained on behalf of Lincolnshire County Council Highways Department with the service enhanced from 7 cuts per annum as requested by LCC for functional highways reasons to 12-13 cuts per annum dependent on the season to ensure they are more visually pleasing. This gives a frequency of cut of once every 2-3 weeks.

All other verge maintenance, including the rural cutting round where the verges are cut on only 3 occasions per annum for highways maintenance reasons, is the responsibility of Lincolnshire County Council Highways Department.

All trees on adopted highways verges are the responsibility of Lincolnshire County Council Highways Department  irrespective of whoever is cutting the grass on that verge.

Horticultural Planting Features

We maintain all flower beds, rose beds, shrub beds, herbaceous borders, rockeries, hedges and trees within its parks and open spaces.

These areas are maintained by our experienced in-house team of staff to ensure they are clean, visually attractive and sustainable.

Flowerbeds are planted with bedding for summer and spring displays in June and October/November and are maintained to the appropriate horticultural standards including weeding and litter control.

Rose beds, shrub beds, herbaceous borders and rockeries are maintained as appropriate their location and the variety of planting present. Weed control, litter collection and appropriate pruning operations are carried out to ensure the continued visual appeal of these features.

Hedges are generally cut twice a year in July and November with the first cut delayed until the majority of nesting birds have fledged. Each hedge in the July cut is still checked for occupied nests before commencing operations. Some sites have been identified as requiring an earlier cut than July for safety reasons and can be cut three times a year.

Trees within our area of responsibility are managed to ensure their safety, sustainability and visual appeal and to minimise any potential nuisance.

Hard Landscaping and Park Furniture

We provide and maintain footpaths, fences, walls, litter bins, dog bins and benches within our parks and open spaces. All these facilities are regularly inspected to ensure their overall condition remains safe, clean and fit for purpose. Installation, replacement or repairs are carried out by members of our own staff or by approved qualified contractors.
