Is a property listed?

Sometimes a property is known as one name but listed by a different name and a property could be contained within a group. Often buildings around the main listed building are also listed but not referred to in the list. Please contact Customer Services on 01507 601111 and ask for the Planning Information Officer to find out if a building is listed.

What does listing mean?

Generally buildings are listed because of age, rarity, architectural merit and method of construction. The older a building is the more likely it is to be listed. Listed Building Consent is necessary for works of internal or external alteration, demolition or extension.

A “Guide to Listed Buildings” can be obtained by contacting Customer Services on 01507 601111 and asking for the Planning Information Officer.

How do I get a property listed?

The Information sheet "How to ask for a building to be listed” can be downloaded or contact Customer Services on 01507 601111 and ask for the Planning Information Officer.

The Secretary of State is responsible for listing buildings not the District Council. English Heritage advises the Secretary of State on the suitability for listing.

Is a property within a Conservation Area?

Please contact Customer Services on 01507 601111 and ask for the Planning Information Officer.

What is a Conservation Area?

Conservation Areas are areas identified as having special architectural or historic interest, which should be protected and improved. Conservation Area designation imposes some additional controls over alteration to property and works to trees. Some Conservation Areas also have “Article 4 Directions” which mean that many basic works altering buildings can require planning permission.

A leaflet “Living in a Conservation Area” guide can be obtained by contacting Customer Services on 01507 601111 and asking for the Planning Information Officer.

I want to change my windows/front door/roof/erect satellite dish etc.?

Anyone proposing works to buildings in a Conservation Area should contact Customer Services on 01507 601111 and ask for the Planning Information Officer.
