Food Hygiene Award Scheme

Tomato SaladConcerned about food hygiene? For all food premises inspected from 1st January 2006 you can now see the hygiene rating score given to that premises by the Food Safety officers within the Commercial Team.

Premises are being rated against standards of hygiene and structure in line with food hygiene legislation - not against the quality of the food produced.

It will take some time to visit every business. All food businesses will receive an unannounced inspection and be given a rating. Updates will be displayed monthly on this website, so watch this space for the growing list of rated food businesses.

Search for Food Premises.

Businesses will be awarded a window sticker which can be displayed at their premises - look out for their Food Hygiene Rating. The rating scale will range from zero to three "Stars". The table below gives a guide to the differences in score rating.

To make a rating, the sort of things we look for are
  • Food handling staff suitably trained in food hygiene and implementation of hygienic practices

  • Documented food safety management system

  • Regular checking and recording of fridge and cooked food temperatures

  • Pest control procedures

  • Regular checking of date coding and condition of food

  • The use of antibacterial liquid soap and disposable towels or other hygienic means of hand drying

  • Good standards of cleanliness and documented cleaning schedules
