Each property has been valued and placed in one of eight Council Tax bands, ranging from A to H. This has been done by the Valuation Office Agency, which is part of HM Revenues and Customs, not the Council.
Your Council Tax charge will depend on which band your property has been placed in, and this is shown on the front of your bill. You can also check the band on your property using our band search.
You can look up the band of any property in England and Wales by going to the Valuation Office Agency's website.
The Valuation Office always places a band on a property based on what the property would have been worth on 1st April 1991. This means that properties not built until after this date are still valued as if they had been built on the 1st April 1991.
The current table of bands and values are as follows:
- Band A Up to and including £40,000
- Band B £40,001 - £52,000
- Band C £52,001 - £68,000
- Band D £68,001 - £88,000
- Band E £88,001 - £120,000
- Band F £120,001 - £160,000
- Band G £160,001 - £320,000
- Band H More than £320,000
Banding Appeals
You can make an appeal to the Valuation Office if you think your band is too high, but usually you must make an appeal within 6 months of moving into a property or becoming the owner of a property.
If you do appeal you MUST carry on paying your original bill. If your appeal is successful we will refund any money that you have overpaid.
To make an appeal call the Valuation Office on 01522 340300 or write to them at the following address:
