What is a risk?
This could be described as the likelihood to cause harm.


What is a hazard?
This could be described as something with the potential to cause harm and may include substances, machines and the working environment.


What does an employer need to assess?
The risks to the health and safety of employees (including young persons and new or expectant mothers) to which they are exposed while they are at work.


How do I do a risk assessment?
  • Look for the hazards
  • Decide who might be harmed
  • Decide on the risks arising from the hazard and whether your existing precautions are adequate or whether more should be done
  • Record your findings
  • Review the assessment from time to time and revise it if necessary.
