Benefit Fraud
 

We have a dedicated team that investigates allegations of benefit fraud.

We seek to:

  • prevent
  • detect
  • deter

any abuse of the Housing Benefit and Council Tax Benefit claims system.

We treat Benefit Fraud seriously and we will look into any allegations of Fraud against the Benefit system.

You can report a suspected fraud by:

  • completing a form on-line       
  • calling the Freephone Hotline 0800 002 008

You are committing Benefit Fraud if you:

  • make a false statement  or
  • knowingly fail to tell us about:
  • Income changes
  • Capital changes
  • Someone living in your household
  • A change in circumstances

To report a change in circumstances, you can download a form, request a form or pick one up at our customer service centres.

Benefit Fraud is a serious offence:

  • punishable by law,
  • can lead to a criminal conviction in court,
  • and a criminal record.
  • You will also have to repay any overpayment and any other costs or  
  • penalties that may be added
We have a Code of Practice for officers who carry out investigations.
