Beach Lifeguards provide a helping hand for parents visiting the coast

WRISTBANDS that include the mobile phone number of parents are one way that East Lindsey District Council is reuniting lost children on the district’s beaches during the busy summer season.

Each year millions of visitors flock to the Lincolnshire coast to enjoy the award winning beaches and to take a refreshing dip in the sea. This is the prefect family beach holiday location.

The safety of children on the beach is a major issue for all parents as well as our lifeguards and staff. In 2007 beach lifeguards in East Lindsey dealt with almost 50 incidents of lost children along the coast.

Cllr Hazel Harding, Chairman of the Local Government Association’s Safer Communities Board, said: "On a hot summer’s day there can be hundreds if not thousands of people on our beaches. It’s very easy for a young child to wander off. Tagging your toddler allows lifeguards to get families safely through the day by quickly reuniting lost children with their parents.

"The scheme is also proving a great way to improve beach safety awareness with many lifeguards giving out leaflets with top tips on staying safe on the beach along with the wristbands."

East Lindsey District Council's Portfolio Holder for Health and Well-being, Councillor Sandra Harrison, said: "Knowing your children are safe and that the family can have an enjoyable holiday where people keep an eye out for each other is an important issue for many parents. As a family holiday destination safety and security of families is one of our fundamental priorities."
